AA Intergroups & Regions Explained

What is an Intergroup?

The aim of an Alcoholics Anonymous Intergroup is to support the groups in its geographical area in the common purpose of carrying the AA message to the still suffering alcoholic; and through the legacies of Unity, Service and Recovery, to develop and maintain good relations across our local community.

In London, there are two Regions - London Region North and London Region South - and there are many Intergroups within these Regions. There is also a London Online Intergroup for groups that are online only and that don’t have a set geographical area but still consider themselves based within London. And the Poles in the UK Intergroup is affiliated with London Region North even though it supports the Polish speaking fellowship across the whole of the UK.

Who attends Intergroup meetings?

Intergroups are simply a service committee that represents and supports the local AA groups in their area. By belonging to a local intergroup, it brings the group into the wider structure of AA.

All online and physical AA groups are encouraged to join an intergroup to share procedures and resources. This helps avoid duplication, makes admin more efficient, and keeps groups aligned with our common purpose, ensuring the wider AA traditions are followed.

Intergroup meetings are usually attended by Intergroup officers and GSRs, but any AA member is very welcome and encouraged to attend.

.

How often do the meetings happen and how can I attend?

Most Intergroups meet every two months and can be either in person or virtual - check the relevant Intergroup page for your area for details.

If you are a GSR and would like to join your local Intergroup, please use the contact details given on the relevant Intergroup page.

.

I’m interested in doing service at Intergroup level. How do I go about this?

A minimum of 2 years’ sobriety is usually required but voting in is at the discretion of the Intergroup. If you are interested, or know someone who is interested in any vacant service positions listed on the Intergroup page, please attend your next Intergroup meeting. It’s advisable to contact the Intergroup directly to get a list of the latest vacant roles (as information online can be outdated), and for the details about the next meeting.

London Regions and Intergroups

The London regions are divided by London Region North, covering the area north of the River Thames; and London Region South, covering the south of the river.
